Introduction to special engineering plastics polyether sulfone and poly (aryl ether sulfone) (PES)
1. Development history
polyether sulfone was developed by ICI company in 1972 and sold all over the world under the brand Victrex. BASF of Germany produces and sells under the brand name of ultrason E. In recent years, the production and sales of engineering thermoplastic resins around the world have been in a low state, especially polyether sulfone. The Polyethersulfone plant with a production capacity of 5000 tons/year was shut down by bonamen in 1991. At present, the largest manufacturer is BASF. Jilin University pilot plant, Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry and Xuzhou engineering plastics factory in China have a small number of pilot varieties
2. Toothbrush is the main tool for ordinary people to maintain oral hygiene. The main production method
PES has two production routes, namely bisphenol route and monophenol route. These two routes are nucleophilic high-temperature displacement reaction, adding strong base in the polymerization process, and using high boiling point inert solvent
3. Physical and chemical properties
because there is no ester structure unit in the molecular structure of polyethersulfone, polyethersulfone has excellent thermal properties and oxidation stability. It is confirmed by UL that the continuous service temperature of polyethersulfone is 180 ℃, and meets the flame retardant requirements of UL94V-0 (thickness is 0.51mm). Polyethersulfone is resistant to stress cracking and insoluble in polar solvents such as ketones and some halogenated hydrocarbons. It is resistant to hydrolysis and most acids, bases, lipids, hydrocarbons, alcohols, Oils and lipids. The properties of polymer can be improved by controlling its molecular weight or adding various reinforcing materials and fibers. The resin meets the requirements of FDA and can be used in parts in contact with food
4. Processing molding
although PES is a high-temperature engineering thermoplastic resin, it can still be processed according to conventional thermoplastic processing technology. Injection molding, extrusion molding, blow molding, compression molding or vacuum molding can be used. High mold temperature is helpful to molding and reduce the stress caused by molding. Generally, the injection molding temperature is 310 ~ 390 ℃, and the mold temperature is 140 ~ 180 ℃. PES is an amorphous resin with small mold shrinkage, which can be processed into products with high pairing tolerance requirements and thin wall
5. Modified products
typical modified PES varieties include glass fiber reinforced and carbon fiber modified conductive resins
6. Application field
PES has unique design properties, including: high mechanical properties in a wide temperature range (-100 ~ 200 ℃); High heat deformation temperature and good heat aging resistance; Long term use temperature up to 180 ℃; Good weather resistance of products; Flame retardant and low smoke density; Good electrical performance; Transparency, etc. Therefore, PES products are widely used in electrical, electronic, mechanical, medical, food and aerospace fields
applications in the electrical and electronic industry mainly include coil framework, contactor, printed circuit board with two-dimensional and three-dimensional space structure, switch parts, lamp holder base, battery and battery cover, capacitor thin mold, etc. Because PES products have a long-term service temperature of 180 ℃, they are UL94V-0 materials, with high dimensional stability and good electrical insulation performance, so they have become the preferred materials for electrical engineering structural materials
for applications in the machinery industry, glass fiber reinforced grades are mainly selected, and the products have creep resistance, hardness, dimensional stability and other characteristics. It is suitable for making bearing brackets and shells of mechanical parts
applications in automobile manufacturing industry mainly include reflective parts of lighting lamps, with peak temperature up to 200 ℃, and can be made into aluminum alloy reflective devices. There are also automobile electrical connectors, electronic, electrical mechanical control components, seat frames, windows, masks, water pumps and oil pumps
the application in the aviation field has passed the Federal Aviation specification clause 25853 and the passenger aircraft technical standard clause 100001, which are used for the aircraft interior trim, including brackets, doors, windows, etc., to improve safety. Polyethersulfone has excellent transmittance to radar rays. At present, it has been used to replace the past epoxy parts of radar radomes
applications in the field of medical and health care. Polyethersulfone products are resistant to hydrolysis and disinfection solvents. Products include pliers, covers, operating room lighting components, centrifugal pumps, handles of surgical devices, water heaters, hot water pipes, thermometers, etc
the application of kitchen utensils, including coffee maker, egg boiler, microwave, hot water pump, etc
applications in lighting and optical fields, including reflectors and signal lamps. PES products have the characteristics of transparent coloring, UV stability and long-term use in outdoor environment
polyethersulfone can be prepared into various ultrafiltration membranes, osmotic membranes, reverse osmosis membranes and mesoporous fibers with high mechanical strength through solvent technology. Its products are used in energy saving, water treatment and other fields
because polyethersulfone belongs to the category of amorphous resin, it can be used as coating material to coat metal surfaces
7. Development trends
polyethersulfone is mainly developed by copolymerization, with the purpose of improving its comprehensive properties and processing properties to meet the needs of the market. The Polyethersulfone/polysulfone copolymer developed by bonamen company has different isotropic products with different component percentages and resin properties. The copolymer has a higher thermal deformation temperature than polysulfone, which is repeatedly cleaned for more than 3 times, lower water absorption than polyethersulfone, better flow processing performance, and can be enhanced with GF
Boehner company recently developed polyethersulfone paint with the brand number of super shield. It can be used with fluon one coat on kitchen appliances to form a non stick composite coating
BASF recently developed polyethersulfone thermoplastic rigid foam. The material has the characteristics of high heat deformation temperature, heat aging, low smoke volatile density, low toxicity, hydrolysis resistance, acid resistance and alkali resistance of Nanjing's active docking with the national "made in China 2025" strategy. This kind of hard foam material and polyethersulfone resin composites have a bright future in the aerospace field. Because of its hard and light properties, the material can also be used in shipbuilding, trains, medical and sporting goods
the fibers and their composites of aromatic polyamide (para) have the characteristics of high tensile strength, high modulus, low elongation, combustion resistance, high temperature resistance, resistance to organic solvents, fuels, lubricants, etc., so they are widely used in engineering. At present, PPTA, MPIA, PBA, etc. have been developed and applied in industry
